Faithfully written. A step by step guide toward writing the novel you have always dreamed of.

Getting to know your characters

Who am I writing about?

First step first is always prayer in any project. Ask God who He wants you to write about. Ask God to introduce you to these folks, real or fiction.

Fictional friends and other fictional characters

Just like in real life, you are going to like some, and want to distance yourself from some.

Think of your characters as people you are metting for the first time. Now, get into a quiet place, and let God introduce you.

Their story

Just every real person in real life, every fictional character must have a background. Use the following steps to get to know him or her.

Hello, my name is…

  • Character’s gender male or female
  • Character’s age
  • Height weight, hair color, etc
  • Area and class of living
  • Occupation school work, etc

Use this list to meet your characters. Each will be unique.

My story

Next thing is to get to know your characters as deep as possible.

You will learn more in depth as your story goes. But here is a starting point.

Grab a cup of coffee, and listen close to what God tells you about these things about him or her.

  • Place of birth ?
  • Life goals short and long term (Career or education goals if needed.)
  • Family background and present
  • Character’s weaknesses and strengths (Important to the building of the story.)
  • Good or bad character (antagonist or protagonist)
  • Note for background characters, you may not know their life story. Just enough to know how they are connected.

Please realize there may be more details for one character than another.
