With Samantha C Sinclair, and Brittany N Sinclair

This week

Welcome to Friday. As you have probably noticed, we are shining a light on Down Syndrome today. In a few minutes, please read, “What is Down Syndrome,” written by my sister Brittany N Sinclair.

How does this tie into the book series, and why did we choose this topic you ask? First, in The GOD’S Silver Lining Book Series, there is a child with Down Syndrome.

Second, the mission of this blog, number one is to glorify God. Along with the intent to encourage, inspire, and educate. Having a disability myself, it is important to me to raise awareness. Everyone with a disability deserves a chance, and an opportunity to have a voice. If you yourself, your child, or someone you love have a disability, please remember, and teach them these three things. First, God made you for a reason, and HE has a purpose for your life. Second, you are only impaired if you choose to be. Third, look on the bright sie of life. You are going to have cloudy and rough days. Just don’t let the clouds hide the sun forever. It isn’t a bad life, just a rough day.

What is Down Syndrome? By Brittany N Sinclair

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition. It’s caused by an extra or partial copy of chromosome 21. This can cause physical and cognitive development delays, leading to a large variety of symptoms and challenges.

Looking into the challenges

Children with down syndrome often experience mild to moderate intellectual disabilitys, motor delays, and/or delay in language skills.

Health issues can occur with down syndrome as well. These could include digestive problems, vision or hearing issues, or heart defects. sleep apnea can occur.

Spinal issues could also be a concern. Children with down syndrom can be more at risk for Leukemia.

Having Down syndrome can raise the risk for dementia, at an earlier age.

Other health issues such as thyroid problems, dental problems, seizures, depression, anxiety, autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also may be more likely.

Common features associated with Down Syndrome

* Flattened face and small nose with a flat bridge.

* Small head.

* Short neck.

*Tongue that tends to stick out of the mouth.

*Upward slanting eyelids.

*Skin fold of the upper eyelid that covers the inner corner of the eye.

* Small, rounded ears.

* Wide, small hands, with a single crease in the palm. Short fingers.

* Small feet with a space between the first and second toes.

* Tiny white spots on the colored part of the eye, called the iris. These white spots are called Brushfield’s spots.

* Short height.

* Poor muscle tone in infancy.

* loose joints, and too flexible

Looking deeper

The term “syndrome” refers to a set of symptoms that tend to happen together. With a syndrome, there is a pattern of differences or problems.

The condition is named after an English physician, John Langdon Down. Down was the first to diagnose DS in 1866.

Early intervention, and special education services can help children and teens with Down syndrome reach their full potential.

Services for adults with Down syndrome can help support living a full life.

Some parents have a greater risk of having a baby with Down syndrome. Risk factors include:

* Older age

* Being carriers of the genetic translocation for Down syndrome.

* Having had one child with Down syndrome.

* Down syndrome is not passed down in families. The condition is caused by a random unusual cell division. This can happen during the development of the sperm cell or the egg cell or during early development of the baby in the womb. Translocation Down syndrome can be passed from parent to child. But only a small number of children with Down syndrome have translocation and only some of them inherited it from one of their parents.

* Children with Down syndrome take longer to reach developmental milestones, such as sitting, talking, and walking.

* Occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech and language therapy can help improve physical functioning and speech.
