Living with COPD, and trusting God through the struggle.

Samantha C Sinclair July 12, 2025

My Grandma lives with COPD. This week, she was hospitalized with a serious flair up. Over three gallons of fluid was gotten off her with medication. She is home now, but still recovering. Thankfully, no damage was done to her heart. It was a miracle of God.

Breathing Easy: Understanding COPD and Finding Hope in God

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that affects millions of people around the world. It’s a condition that can make everyday activities challenging, leaving patients feeling breathless, frustrated, and exhausted. As a Christian, it’s important to understand the physical and emotional aspects of COPD and find hope in God’s presence.

What is COPD

COPD is a group of lung diseases, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis, that damage the air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, which can worsen over time. These symptoms should be taken seriously at onset.

Living with COPD

Although COPD can be a challenging condition to manage, many people live active and fulfilling lives with proper treatment and lifestyle changes. This includes:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Staying physically active
  • Avoiding pollutants and irritants
  • Using medication and oxygen therapy as prescribed

As Christians, we know that God is our healer and comforter. In times of struggle, we can turn to Him for strength and guidance. Psalm 38:9-10 reminds us, “Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.”

Prayer and Support

If you or a loved one is living with COPD, know that you’re not alone. Reach out to family, friends, and healthcare professionals for support. And don’t forget to pray. Ask God to:

  • Grant strength and endurance
  • Provide peace and comfort
  • Guide medical professionals and treatment plans

COPD may be a challenging condition, but with the right treatment and support, it’s possible to live a fulfilling life. As Christians, we can find hope and comfort in God’s presence, knowing that He’s with us every step of the way.

Embrace the support system God blesses you with. That support may come through family, friends, and even medical professionals.

Finding things you enjoy is important. Don’t focus only on your COPD. Maybe you enjoy music, reading, sewing, or other activities.

Spending time in prayer, and in GOD’S Word, daily is crucial to all of us.

I pray this has been a help and encouragement to you.

Please share with others to raise awareness, and spread encouragement.

A sign that reads, “COPD”.
