Learning as an adult how to set healthy boundaries

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

By Samantha C Sinclair

So how do you maintain your personal health?

This can take on many parts and meanings.

So first, how do you do this at all, in any way?

Some people are taught these skills as children by parents. However, some have to figure it out when they are grown or nearly there.

Let’s start with the most important. How’s your spiritual health? How is your relationship with God. When I am not where I should be in my spiritual well being, all other areas struggle.

You might try setting aside a certain time to have alone time with God. This is crucial to all areas of your health. One of the stories that was shared with me about my great Grandma has stuck with me. She would lock herself in the bathroom each night, to read her Bible and pray.

Also getting in the habit of praying before any choice made is healthy. No matter big or small. I need to work on all areas myself.

Let’s go to physical health.

First, our body needs healthy food and water. Think back to our spiritual health. What do we need to live? We need spiritual food and water, and to rest in the peace and safety of God. Our Maker.

So are you eating healthy, getting enough water? Sure, cookies and cakes are yummy. But they don’t sustain us.

Rest! Do we any get enough of that? Maybe you work long hours. Maybe the baby keeps you up. Not a lot you can do about this. Maybe you are stressed to the max. A big choice stands in your path.

There is one common thing you can do in all this. Pray. God will help you through.

Mental and emotional wellbeing!

Well I for one can say I struggle in this department from time to time. You can admit it. God already knows, and wants to help.

Mental and emotional pain are real and true. You are not crazy. You are certainly not alone. Everyone has a rough day every now and again. But sometimes the rough days stick around for a while. God sees that. God knows that. God loves you.

Just like when you have a physical illness you go to a doctor.

When you are struggling in spirit, reach out to those God has provided you. That could be a trusted family member, friend, pastor, counselor… Pray and ask God to send someone. HE will. Sometimes, we get something even better. He reaches down right then, and grants peace. But it might take time, people, and even medicine. God gave man the know how to make that medicine. Don’t allow anyone make you feel ashamed if you need counseling, meds, or whatever it may be that you need to be healthy in all areas.

Just remember through it all, if you allow God to be there you won’t regret it.
