Kentucky Governor began his severe weather briefing on Monday by saying he hoped everyone watching was safe, and was getting to spend time with their family as we observed memorial day. He noted on Sunday many were not safe.
At the time of the briefing there had been one confirmed tornado, which spent at least forty miles on the ground. This tornado came close to the prison in Eddy Ville. The tornado bearly missed Mayfield, and just went slightly North of Dawson Springs Kentucky. These areas were hit hard during the December 2021 severe weather outbreak. One family that lost their home in 2021 lost their home on Sunday night. According to the Governor reports have been given that Dawson Springs was hit on Sunday night. However, it was an area that has the mailing address of Dawson Springs. He says these areas are very close and tight together.
Thousands were left without power, and some hospitals and long-term care facilities were on generated power. Power crews have worked tirelessly to restore power. According to the governor at the time of his briefing, there were some areas that it could take days because such damage had occurred.
There were a number of other suspected tornadoes that spun down and back up. The national weather service is working to survey damage this week, and we will follow that story.
The governor gave his thanks to all who have worked tirelessly in the emergency operation center. The center was moved to a level three status, and multiple departments have worked together to help those impacted in the state. He also specifically thanked first responders, including those who work behind the scenes. Emergency management, energy environment, cabinet, national weather, service, transportation cabinet, Kentucky, state police, department for public health, Kentucky, state parks, forestry, and so many more were involved in efforts to help victims through emergency operation center. Countless homes and businesses suffered storm damage, multiple roads and interstates were affected as well.
