Each and every time a Law Enforcement Officer puts on their uniform, they know it could be their last. Their family’s worst nightmare is hearing the words, “Officer down.” Hearing that your loved one is not coming home is heart breaking. Four officer’s were killed in the line of duty on Monday. Four others wounded.
At approximately 1:30pm on Monday, US marshals fugitive division were attempting to serve a warrant on a male subject. The subject now known as 39-year-old Joshua Clark Hughes Junior. was wanted on charges of possession of firearm by a convicted felon. He was also wanted for felony to elude, two countsout of Lincoln county North Carolina. The tragic officer involved shooting happened at a residence in the 5000 block of Galway Drive.
The subject came out of the residence with a fire arm. Upon perceiving a deadly threat, officer’s fired their service weapons hitting the suspect. Units on scene requested instant response from other units. Swat begin negotiation with individuals inside the residence. Two individuals exited the residence, they were transported for questioning.
The suspect was pronounced deceased. In all a total of eight officers were shot, four of them losing their lives. Among them was CMPD officer Joshua Eyer. Joshua leaves behind his wife and young son.
A large response by multiple levels resulted. Response included, Charlotte Mecklenburg, Police Department, CMPD’s crime investigation, US Marshall’s office, North Carolina Department of adult corrections, The US attorneys office, CMPD’s operation command, Victim services, North Carolina State Highway patrol, Medic, and Charlotte fire department The bureau of alcohol, firearm and explosives, Mecklenburg sheriffs office, .
The homicide unit is investigating. This is an ongoing investigation.
