Urgent change needed in small towns.

By Samantha C Sinclair March 30 2024
Handicapped and elderly people should have more accessibility in a small town.
While accessibility to buildings and side walks are an important part of this, I am going to take it a step farther.
First, transportation.
Yes, there is things like RTEC. While Medicaid pays for most trips for medical appointments they need a 72 hours notice. Only exception is if the patient needs to be seen emergency on that same day. Medicare does not pay for RTEC. Therefore most elders can not use this service.
For those who can use the service, if we want to go on a cash trip it is hard. Again, they need to have a 72 hours notice. That leaves us needing someone to take us or pick up what ever we need if we need it before 72 hours. Second, if going very far or using the service very many times runs into more money than we on fixed incomes can fork out.

Next, let’s talk about drink machines. Sometimes those who are visually impaired might want to do things independently. We have to either allow someone to get our drink for us, or have them guide us to the right spot to hold our cup under the machine. This is because there are no braille labels.

Third. Stores should be required to either have a braille label showing what is where, or at least have a braille guide of the store. While most do have a E version of this on their app, not everyone uses this. Also in some cases something’s is not accessible with our screen reader.

I’m sure there are other things I could add. But you are probably tired of reading.
The last thing I’ll say for now is this.
I’m tired of the excuse small towns don’t have the funding for all this. Or, their isn’t enough of us in a small town for all this.
It’s funny they have enough for sports and everything else. Also, the disabilities at must be completely discarded by most in small towns. I for one am tired of it. I have a feeling I’m not the only one. We have to start speaking up. Come on, disabled and elderly matter just as much as anyone else. Our American Vets are treated like trash. They should be getting ball player’s pay, and ball players should be getting theirs.

Thanks for reading. God bless.
